“There was a lack of representation within the basketball world so, I decided that I wanted to do something for my community.”

ABOUT MWSBL
The Muslim Women’s Summer Basketball League (MWSBL) is a Toronto-based nonprofit dedicated to uniting women and allies (ages 12+) through the sport of basketball. While our league was initially set to launch in the summer of 2020, COVID-19 delayed our plans. However, we used that time to build a platform that celebrates and amplifies the stories of inspirational Muslim female hoopers from around the world, while breaking down misconceptions about Muslim women in sports.
In the summer of 2022, we officially tipped off our first season with eight teams, each featuring 8 to 10 players, competing over seven exciting weeks at TARIC Mosque in Toronto's West End.
In February 2025, we proudly celebrated five years of empowering Muslim women in sports. Since our launch on February 3, 2020, we've grown from an online storytelling platform to a thriving community organization. Over the years, we've:
Engaged over 500 unique hoopers
Mobilized 50+ dedicated volunteers
Hosted 20 successful programs
With the incredible support of over 17 partners and sponsors, we've proudly organized:
5 skills clinics (each running for 5 to 6 weeks)
3 summer league seasons (each running for 8 weeks)
2 MWSBL x Hijabi Ballers tournaments (two day tournament)
In the past year alone, we expanded our reach by launching a youth division (aged 12-17) and a travel team— and insha’Allah (God Willing), there’s much more to come!
While we continue to grow, our mission remains the same: to create spaces where Muslim women feel included, valued, and empowered as athletes.
Thank you to our participants, volunteers, supporters, and partners— we wouldn’t be celebrating this milestone without you.
